Membership & Involvement

1. What is the Indiana Veterinary Technician Association (IVTA)?
The IVTA is a professional organization dedicated to advancing the veterinary nursing profession in Indiana through education, advocacy, and professional development.

2. Who can become a member of the IVTA?
Membership is open to credentialed veterinary technicians (RVTs), veterinary assistants, veterinary technician students, and other allied veterinary professionals interested in supporting the field.

3. How do I become a member of the IVTA?
You can join by visiting our website and completing the membership application. Various membership tiers are available, including student, active, and hospital group memberships.

4. What are the benefits of IVTA membership?
Members receive access to continuing education (CE) opportunities, professional networking events, legislative updates, mentorship programs, and advocacy initiatives aimed at advancing veterinary technicians in Indiana.

Licensing & Credentialing

5. How do I become a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) in Indiana?
To become an RVT in Indiana, you must graduate from an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology program and pass the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE). You must then apply for state licensure through the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency (IPLA).

6. How do I renew my RVT license in Indiana?
RVTs must renew their licenses biennially through the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency (IPLA). License renewal requires completion of state-mandated continuing education (CE) hours.

7. What continuing education (CE) is required for RVT license renewal?
Indiana requires RVTs to complete 16 hours of approved CE every two years, with at least 50% being RACE-approved or from an approved educational institution. Specific CE requirements may be found on the IPLA website.

8. I let my RVT license lapse. How do I reinstate it?
If your license has expired, you may need to complete additional CE hours and submit a reinstatement application through the IPLA. Contact the licensing board for specific requirements.

Scope of Practice & Utilization

9. What is the scope of practice for RVTs in Indiana?
Indiana RVTs may perform a variety of clinical tasks under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian, including anesthesia monitoring, laboratory testing, radiology, and medical nursing. The Indiana Veterinary Practice Act outlines specific duties and limitations.

10. Can RVTs perform dental extractions in Indiana?
Under Indiana law, RVTs are not permitted to perform dental extractions, as this is considered a surgical procedure that must be completed by a licensed veterinarian.

11. Can veterinary assistants perform the same tasks as RVTs?
Yes. Veterinary assistants work under direct supervision and are limited to procedures and tasks that they have been trained to perform. The DVM must feel comfortable as well as the assistant performing the assigned tasks. RVTs can perform tasks under indirect supervision. Whereas a veterinary assistant must be under direct supervision of a DVM or RVT.

12. What is the IVTA doing to advocate for better utilization of veterinary technicians?
The IVTA is actively working with the Indiana Veterinary Medical Association (IVMA) and state legislators to improve veterinary technician utilization, title protection, and increased scope of practice where appropriate. We also provide education to clinics on proper technician utilization to improve workflow efficiency and patient care.

Legislation & Advocacy

13. What is title protection, and why is it important?
Title protection ensures that only those who have met the educational and licensing requirements can call themselves a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT), veterinary technician, technician, or “tech.” This prevents unqualified individuals from misrepresenting themselves and helps elevate the profession.

14. What legislative initiatives is the IVTA currently working on?
The IVTA is actively advocating for:

  • Title protection for veterinary technicians

  • Improved utilization of RVTs in veterinary practice

  • Better workplace conditions for veterinary professionals

  • Increased awareness and respect for veterinary nursing/technology as a career

  • Scope of practice with delineation for veterinary technicians and assistants

We collaborate with the Indiana Veterinary Medical Association (IVMA) and state representatives to push these initiatives forward.

15. How can I get involved in IVTA advocacy efforts?
